Silent GOOD People

Today, marks the 25th anniversary of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday. Personally, I think it’s more about the legacy of his fight for equality and justice than it is about him as a person.

One of my favorite quotes from him is….

“History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people.”

Belive it or not, there are a lot of Silent GOOD people in the earth. Think about it….. Silent-GOOD-people. Those that have the skill, talent, capacity, and intellect, but choose to do nothing or ignore the clarion call to get up and let their voice be heard!

Balance vs. Harmony

Melody is possible because of sharps and flats

Finding balance or harmony in community work has been  a interesting process difficult for me.

For most of my adult life I worked for this large school district. I had lots of fun teaching at this middle school and this high school. I won a big award, that made me :). I was named TOY- Teacher Of The Year. I was even blessed to work at the district level working serving in the Department Of Community Engagement. It was during this time of building partnerships for our school district with businesses, non-profits, and faith-based organizations that I began to see more of the needs within Jacksonville.

Now get this. Most of my time has been on helping to increase student academic achievement: either directly or from an administrative perspective. Recently, the leading  to start a ministry has me thinking…..where is the balance? Or, where is the harmony? Or is it both?

Balance is defined by Webster: to bring into harmony or proportion.

Harmony is defined by Webster: an interweaving of different accounts into a single narrative.

Hmm. I believe there can be balance. I believe there can be harmony. It’s like playing the piano. In order to have balance you must have sharps and flats.

What does it look like? Not exactly sure, I’m learning to enjoy the ride. Difficult at times? Yes. I have more confidence in HIM who has all things under control, than I who struggles daily. God wants me to succeed more than I do.

This blog may take on a different read. We shall see. Keep your eyes open.

My desire is to serve my generation….

Access Denied

I posted a video a few days ago that the church plant Is On! What I didn’t know is the challenges I would experience thereafter recording the video.

Yesterday, I sent an email to a local school district official asking for assistance with gaining access to an area middle school. I received an encouraging reply about possibly being able to move forward. Well, late yesterday I received an email from the official that I would NOT be able to use the middle school. Talk about being dissappointed! This was the perfect location (IMO): space, parking, easily recognized in the city, downtown. It was perfect!

To make the sting stronger: I recorded a video in front of the school yesterday.

Lesson learned: When you’re denied access to an area or thing you really wanted, trust God that what he has planned is far greater than what you wanted.

I have no idea why our church plant won’t be able to use the school. I can’t dwell on it long. The quest now is to identify another location….quickly. I think it’s very important to build relationships in the community where we serve before the launch.

I hope you enjoy your Saturday!
